Tankless Hot Water Heater Installation, Service and Repair – Kansas City

What is the Difference Between Tankless Water Heaters and Traditional Hot Water Heaters?

A tankless hot water heater is an on demand or instantaneous water heater, that provides hot water when needed. Standard hot water heaters use a large tank that constantly heats large amounts of water and stores it for future use.

What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of a Tankless Hot Water Heater?

There are several advantages. A tankless hot water heater, also commonly called a wall-mounted or inline water heater, provide on-demand hot water when you want it and it never runs out. When the hot water is turned on, water is pushed through a pipe that is heated by either a gas or electric heating element. There is no waiting for hot water to come from a tank, it is available on demand. A single household can usually get by with just one tankless water system. Also, at 90% + efficiency, a tankless water heater exceeds a standard tank heater by almost 30% in efficiency. Another bonus to a tankless water heater is space savings. A much smaller area is needed to accommodate a tankless vs. a standard tank unit.

Tankless water heaters regulate the amount of hot water that comes from the system and is typically between 2-5 gallons per minute of use. Gas elements in a tankless water system heat up faster than most electric units. In a single household, one unit usually suffices for the hot water needs. One disadvantage in larger households, with more people taking showers at the same time and if too many appliances; such as dishwashers and washing machines are running, one unit may not be able to keep up with the household demand. A second tankless unit can be added to keep up with the added demand, or you can install a dedicated unit supplying hot water to showers to isolate it from the rest of the system.

Are Tankless Water Heaters Cost Effective and Energy Efficient?

The upfront cost of a tankless water is more expensive than a traditional water heater system. But the lifespan of a traditional water heater is between 13-15 years, while a tankless water heater, if properly maintained, can last over 20 years.

Traditional water heaters are constantly heating the water stored within the tank, which requires a constant energy source to maintain the set temperature. Tankless water heaters only heat the water when in use. This alone can save the consumer between $70-$100 a year, depending on water usage.

Another feature to consider is the size comparison. A traditional water heater takes up more room than a tankless water heater. This can be very beneficial when size does matter with allocated spaces.
